Oiva was born on July 5th, 1923 in Cameron Township, just outside of Mattawa, Ontario. His parents, Lydia (Huhtanen) and Victor Arvid Maki, were both immigrants from Finland. The Maki family had a small farm where they raised their eight children. Following Victor’s death in 1949, the family moved to Waters Township, just outside of Sudbury. Oiva worked as an electrician for INCO from 1951 until his retirement in 1982. In his spare time he enjoyed family get-togethers; the outdoors – especially fishing and boating; listening to and playing music; watching sports on television and eating dessert. He passed away on August 31st, 2014 at Finlandia Hoivakoti in Sudbury. Oiva is survived by a daughter, Karla Maki-Esdon (Graham Esdon) of Napanee, Ontario; and two sons, Kurtis (Sarah Faraj) of London, Ontario; and Gavin (Beverly Johns) of Hamilton, Ontario. He is also survived by his grandchildren Hillary Esdon, Hailey Esdon, Nadine Faraj, Shantel Faraj, Tyler Faraj (Nicole McDermott), and Jocelyn Faraj as well as great-grandchild Alina McDermott. Oiva also leaves behind a sister, May Wilson (late Tom), and a brother, Reino Maki (Sherry). He was predeceased by his brothers Walter and Earl Maki and his sisters Lily Riutta, Violet Tiessen and Rose Helin. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Mirja Maki (Earl) and Anita Maki (Walter). Oiva is also remembered by his former wife Lea (Jokinen) Roycroft (Des) and former in-laws Marilyn Pilon (Ray), Irene Lane (Ed), Liz Jokinen (late Eino), Joyce Vaillancourt (late Onni Jokinen), Joyce Jokinen (late Larry) and Suze Jokinen (late Vilho). He is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews from both the Maki and Jokinen families. At Oiva’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. His ashes will be scattered in Mattawa at a later date. Donations in Oiva’s memory can be made to the Sudbury Finnish Rest Home Society Inc. or the charity of your choice.
