It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my father Steve Balon, at the age of 88, on Wednesday December 24th, 2014 at Health Sciences North. Beloved husband of Matilda (Tillie) Balon predeceased. Loving father of Danica (Balon) Riengeutte (Rick) of Sudbury. Cherished grandfather of Kylah (John). Son of the late Dymytro and of the late Nastasia (Beyzkroni) Balon. Sadly missed by his sister-in-law Nevis Lovsin (Frank predeceased). Dear uncle to Brian Lovsin (Mary) and Michael Lovsin (Tanya) and great uncle to Nichlaus, Andrew, Ben, Sarah and Julia. My father was a private person whose greatest joy was being with his family and friends enjoying the simple things that made life good - love, easy laughter, and longtime friendships. His sense of humour was infectious and he especially loved joking around. His family was the centre of his life and we felt it. We had the privilege of learning many life lessons from him including the importance of compassion and keeping an open mind. He was a devoted, loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. Steve loved the outdoors and always enjoyed sitting on the dock at his cottage on Lake Wahnapitae ""taking in nature”. He was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and he shared this through his talents as a mandolin player in the Jubilee Folk Ensemble Orchestra and by his culinary talents of the traditional Ukrainian food and music that he shared with his family and friends. But most of all he was very proud of his granddaughter and he cherished every minute that they spent together. He will be dearly missed. At Steve’s request there will be no funeral visitation or service. Cremation with interment in the family plot at the Park Lawn Cemetery. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Northern Cancer Foundation would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home.
