GEMMELL, E. Freda (Hamilton)

In Loving Memory of Freda Elizabeth Gemmell (nee Hamilton) July 12, 1911 – August 10, 2014 A Kind and Generous Woman Freda was born and raised in Pembroke, Ontario. She moved to Ottawa as a young woman, took the Civil Service exams and worked in the Auditor General’s office for many years. She married Welland Gemmell in February 1943 and spent her early years of marriage in Whitefish and Lake Penage. Freda was proud of her husband’s accomplishments as MPP for Sudbury and as a Cabinet Minister for Ontario – Minister of Mines, then Minister of Lands & Forests. Following Welland’s sudden death in 1954 Freda began a 22-year career as Clerk of Sudbury’s Division/Small Claims Court. She will be sadly missed by daughters Betty Ann Doran (Bruce) and Susan Darling (Scott); grandchildren Rob Doran (Ingrid), Jamie Doran, Bradley Darling (Christine), Geoff Darling (Margot), Shelley Darling (Mark Henderson); and great grand-children Amy, Jenna, Jack, Leah, Gwen, Rowan, Will and Evie. Throughout life Freda was fortunate to have a strong relationship with her sister Marjorie Stinson and brother Renziel Hamilton. She enjoyed bridge and social times with friends. In her youth she played girls hockey and competitive badminton, and was an avid tennis and hockey fan all of her 103 years. She was a founding member of the Sudbury Women’s Institute and a longtime member of the IODE Elizabeth Fry Chapter. She will be widely remembered for her sense of humour, and especially her genuine kindness and generosity. The family is grateful for the caring and support Freda received in her senior years from St. Andrew’s United Church and from staff at The Walford retirement residence. Memorial Service in St. Andrew’s United Church 111 Larch Street, Sudbury Saturday, August 16th, 2014 at 11 a.m. (Friends may gather at the Church after 10 a.m. Saturday) Cremation.
