“Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God”...Mathew 5:9 With endless appreciation for a life well lived, we say goodbye to a gentle man, loyal friend, devoted son and brother, dedicated husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great grandfather. Leonardo Adler Volpini, born April 19, 1923 continued on his journey the morning of November 15, 2014. He brought love and light into this world. His philosophy on life was uncomplicated...‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’. There was no one he failed to see good in, there was no discord that could not be remedied; and his friendly smile, firm handshake and warm embrace were gifted freely and frequently. Leonardo was born in Fano, Italy to Maria Meletti and Leandro Volpini. His only sibling, his older brother Alois and sister-in-law Delia, survive him. He courted and eventually won the heart of Ada Barbarini. Leonardo immigrated to Canada in 1949 and in 1953 was positioned to bring his young family and his mother over to be with him. Together Leonardo and Ada raised five children. His family continued to flourish and Leonardo would eventually boast of his 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Left to cherish the memories of their ‘babbo’ are Marta (Ferruccio Deni), Leandro (Louisette), Patrizia (Felice Bazzul), Catia (Joe Williams) and Mara (Peter Richards). Leonardo’s legacy of family and community will continue to grow within the hearts of his grandchildren and great grandchildren Roberto Deni (wife Nancy; children Joseph, Tommaso, Olivia), Amanda Deni (son Jacob Greenough), Steven Volpini (wife Christine; children Adria, Evan, Mateo), Mark Volpini (wife Melissa; son Noah), Katherine Wilson (husband Eric; children Maxim, Zoe), Stephanie Valentini-Pentney (husband Matthew; children Luke, Callen), Jeffrey Valentini, Kyle Davidson, Samantha Davidson (Keegan Bradley) and Michael Arnason. He will be fondly remembered by Casimir Bazzul, Samantha Bazzul, Cooper Richards, Jessica Richards, Matthew Williams and Rebecca Williams. Leonardo, although a man of modest means, saw himself as ‘the richest man in the world’. He worked several jobs, never refusing an opportunity to better himself for the betterment of his family. He retired from Vale (formerly Inco) as a plate worker in 1984 realizing 32 years of service. Upon his retirement, Leonardo and Ada escaped the northern winters and vacationed in Hollywood Beach Florida for over 20 years. Aside from tending to his vegetable garden behind his home, or meticulously pruning his much adorned apple tree in the front yard, Leonardo enriched our Italian community through his extensive involvement in numerous organizations such as the Sudbury Soccer Association, Cavalieri della Patria, the Societa Caruso and was a founder of the Associazione Marchigiana di Sudbury. For several years Leonardo also participated in the planning of the Caruso Club’s annual Italian Festival, and organizing bocce tournaments. Leonardo Adler Volpini will be resting at the Lougheed Funeral Home, 252 Regent Street at Hazel Street, Sudbury. Visitation for family and friends will be on Tuesday, November 18th from 2-5pm and 7-9pm, with parish prayers at 3pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 19th, 2014, at 10:30am in St. Anthony’s Church, 19 Mary Street, Sudbury. Entombment in the Park Lawn Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, a donation made in Leonardo’s memory to the Northern Cancer Foundation (Cancer Centre) or St. Anthony’s Parish would be sincerely appreciated.
