In loving memory of Helmut Madalvee, age 90 years, who passed away peacefully during the first hour of Thursday, July 30th, 2015 at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, Ontario with his dear son by his side. Beloved husband of Adele (predeceased 2007) and loving father of Roy. He is sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his son of Sudbury and relatives in Estonia. Helmut was born on April 24, 1925 in Ridala, Estonia where his family maintained a small farm. In August of 1944, during the turbulent times of the Second World War, Helmut found his way to Sweden where he resided until 1949. While in Sweden, Helmut worked in a forestry operation and later became a mariner in the merchant navy from 1946 to 1949. His travel by sea brought him to the Miramichi area of New Brunswick in Canada during 1949. Being the adventurous type, he continued onward by rail to Montreal where he later worked at the Dominion Rubber Company. It was in Montreal where Helmut met his loving wife to be, Adele, also originally from Estonia. They became married in Montreal on February 3, 1951. However, the journey continued westward for both Helmut and Adele settling in Sudbury, Ontario during September of 1951. Helmut commenced employment with Inco (now Vale Canada Limited) on September 10, 1951 and he primarily worked in operations located at the Copper Cliff Mill. Helmut retired from Inco on leap year day in 1988 after close to 36½ years of service. Helmut enjoyed the outdoors and had a passion for hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. Also, he was quite the practical handyman conducting various household repairs and designing projects rather meticulously. Helmut was basically quite active during his retirement and always pushed forward even in his later years. The family wishes to thank all of the team of medical practitioners, nurses, support workers, staff and volunteers at the Northeast Cancer Centre and Health Sciences North for their wonderful and compassionate care for Helmut during the past few months. Special thanks to Dr. Noble, Dr. Knight, Dr. Ewing-Bui and Dr. Garrioch for providing excellent care and support to Helmut. It was greatly appreciated! At Helmut’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral. However, a graveside committal service will be held at the family plot located at the Civic Memorial Cemetery, 365 Second Avenue North, Sudbury, Ontario on FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Cremation has already taken place at the Park Lawn Crematorium in Sudbury. For those who wish, donations in Helmut’s memory may be made to the Northern Cancer Foundation or Health Sciences North Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to Lougheed Funeral Home in Sudbury.
